Who was "the Bargello"? The Bargello was a person. An officer with the owner to keep the order during the war. The Bargello was a dictator and he was present in many kingdoms in Italy before unification especially in Papal state. The term Bargello comes from the longobard word "bargillus" (for Goths "bargi", for germans "burg") which means tower-fortress or castle. The Bargello was like extension, "palace", seat of power of the "Captain of justice". In Florence like in other cities, coming from another city
History:
After the constitution of the free municipality of Florence and the creation of the "Captain of the people", there was built even the palace named "Bargello". A first building started close to Via del proconsolo in 1255 over Vasari project and Lapo Tedesco. After that, between 1260 and 1280, was built a second part on the via dell'acqua and in 1295 was realized the inner courtyard. The 21 july 1840 inside the chapel of Santa Maria Maddalena, the painter-restores Antonio Marini, found again, a hidden portrait of Dante. In the opinion of Vasari, that's a Giotto painting. In 1859 the jail moved to "le murate" and the restoring works started in to the Bargello palace. They ended into 1865 under direction of Francesco Mazzei. He made ex-novo all the architectural decorations and committing all the painting restoration to Gaetano Bianchi.
